Elementary School QuickStart

Kids 5 to 10 Go Bananas for QuickStart!

Kids love QuickStart Tennis! Having fun is what keeps QuickStart kids constantly coming back for more. Kids who are successful and who feel they are doing well want to get better and play more. Research shows that kids who enjoy exercise and do so often are more successful in the classroom. What better exercise for kids than QuickStart Tennis?

At QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia (QCV), our first priority is getting QuickStart Tennis in PE classes at as many elementary schools as possible. To do this we establish partnerships with public school systems, train PE teachers and provide equipment. We then work with schools to start after-school QuickStart Tennis programs. QCV involves PTAs and PTOs, looking for volunteers and ongoing financial support for school programs. We engage parents and grandparents. We encourage them to play "driveway" or "parking lot" tennis with their kids and start QuickStart Tennis teams. QCV also partners with private schools and home-school groups. We want a racquet in every kid's hand!

"My grandson, who is nine, and I were discussing what he had been doing in school lately, especially in PE class. With wide eyes and excitement he told me that he had been playing Quick Start Tennis for the last two weeks.  He was especially excited knowing that he would be playing with a partner the next week." -- Pat

Kids 5 and 6
At this age, it's all about building basic skills. QuickStart's fitness/conditioning activities work on agility, balance, coordination, footwork and reaction time. These kids begin on the Red Court (36 feet), which can be set up using portable nets just about anywhere indoors or out. Much of the time is spent learning to handle balls and racquets and running around rather than rallying. The best part is  that kids have so much fun and they think they're playing tennis. Equipment: 19-inch racquets, foam balls, koosh balls and bean bags.

Kids 7 and 8
Here, kids really begin to experience QuickStart's "Play to Learn" approach. Fitness/conditioning activities are balanced with racquet-handling and playing skills. The Instant Rally Progression technique is used to teach kids the forehand, backhand, volley and serve.  Lots of game playing is involved. Racquet control and teamwork are emphasized. Equipment: 21- or 23-inch racquets, foam balls, red felt low-compression balls.

Kids 9 and 10
Kids this age are ready to move from the Red Court to the Orange Court (60-feet). These kids concentrate on improving their strokes and adding pace to their shots. Equipment: 23- or 25-inch racquets, orange felt low-compression balls.

Visit equipment and court setup for more information.
